Norge vs. Schwiiz – Pepperkakehus

Pepperkakehus is a Norwegian tradition unknown in Switzerland. In the advent time, Norwegians creat their „pepperkakehuset“ – the gingerbread house. The house is carefully designed on paper before it’s transferd to the dough. The different pieces of the house are then baked and glued together with caramel. Finally, the house is decorated with a white mass consisting of pouder sugar, lemon juice and egg white and usually „Non-stop“ as tiles on the roof.

If you are ambigous, you also make a sledge with reindeer, fir trees, stars and hearts. We felt extremely creative last night and went one step further. Because we are biologists and wanted to set an example for ongoing climate change we added a palm tree, a polar bear, a polar fox, a whale and pinguin.

My owl cup

I got an owl cup the other day from someone who has recently been to Olympia (thanks!!!). Now I enjoy my aeropress or V60 every day in this new cup. I think people smile at me, when they see what a big fuss I make out of a simple cup of coffee. Weighing in beans, the water and measuring the time the water needs to run through the filter. If they only knew…

Viviani Chocolate

This is going to be a sweet post! During my field work this summer a found a little shop on a farm in Aurland, which sold Viviani Chocolate. The chocolate is produced in Germany from biologically produced cacao. By paying more for better quality products, they also support the local farmers.

I have only tried one type: organic dark almonds and I definitely want more!

Hot Chocolate

What a day! It’s cold, rainy and no snow around to make it cosy. I have a cold and Mr. K is sick  in bed. It’s chilly in our flat and I am sitting wrapped in a blanket, drinking tea and trying to write an introduction to a paper on local adaptation and phenotypic plasticity in central and edge populations of ruderal plant species along elevational and latitudinal gradients. (What?). I know.

All that can help here is a steaming hot chocolate with cream! It’s the easiest thing to do really. Put some milk in a pan. Add your favorite dark Chocolate. I like the Chocolate, which is not sweet at all. Warm and steer it until all Chocolate is melted. In the meantime whip some cream. Pure the hot Chocolate in a mug and add the cream. Enjoy! But careful, the milk is hot. I always burn my tongue on the first sip because I can’t wait:-(

Make your own Chocolate bar

Have you ever wanted to make your own Chocolate bar? It’s very easy. You need dark chocolate, butter or coconut oil and whatever you want to have in the chocolate. I used almonds, cranberries and apricots.

Melt the chocolate, add the oil or butter and maybe some cream. Cut the nuts and berries and fruits. Pour the melted chocolate into a flat form and put the nuts, berries and fruits on top of the chocolate. Finished.

The idea from the serendipity blog. There is also a nice way how to wrap the chocolate for a gift.

Apple sauce

The other day I went to the shop and wanted to by apple sauce. But all they had was weight watcher apple sauce. No, I wanted the real stuff. So I decided to buy apples and make it myself. Can’t be that hard. And actually it is very easy. It took me 30min.

Then I got enthusiastic about it and carved a stamp, cut out a piece of fabric for the lid and made the label. Cute, I look forward to the next meal where I can use apple sauce. By the way, I don’t like the english work for apple sauce, so I used the german word for the stamp!

bottles / jars / vase

Mr K. and I have an obsession for old and beautiful glas bottles, jars and vases. Here are some ideas how to use them:

– Bottle: put a long, thin candle into a bottle and use it as a candle holder. It will look nice after a while when the wax starts to drip down.

– Vase: decorate a vase with twine. Use different colours.

– Jar: put a picture inside a jar. You can put whatever you like inside. I use it for our pens.

– Bottle: simply use a bottle as a vase.

– Jar: make a candle light

– Bottle: we serve water in these water bottles from restaurants or hotels whenever we have guests.
