Undredal

Good planing is when you have just a little time to do some sightseeing while working in the field. This was the case today. I made a detour to a village called Undredal. They have the smallest stave church in Norway. Until some years ago, the only access to this place was by boat. And they produce delicious goat cheese.

Sunshine land

After a relaxing weekend with sunbathing and swimming, I am back in the field again. I have one last trip before my holidays! It’s time that I go, because everyone around me is away. Summer holiday in Norway is the most important thing (one of the most important things). At the moment, nobody is around that I can ask where things are or how I book this, where should I put that. Never  start a position right before everybody leaves on their summer holidays (remember for next time!).

Another splendid summer day today and I start to wonder if I my plane has taken me in the wrong direction: south?

Climate change effects on phenology in Alpine plant communities

I got a letter from Switzerland this week. One question was, what are you doing up there? I thought it’s time to explain you why I am here and what the heck I am doing.

I am doing a Postdoc at the University of Bergen. I am interested in the effects of climate change on alpine plant communities. For five years Professor Vigdis Vandvik has conducted a large transplant experiment, where they transplanted vegetation turfs along a temperature and precipitation gradient to simulate future change in climate (warmer and wetter conditions).  They have studied changes in vegetation composition, seedling recruitment and species interactions.

I am interested in how plant phenology is responding to changing climate conditions. For this, I go to the field every week to check when the plants start to produce buds, flowers and seeds and I want to compare if there are differences between the local plants and those which have been transplanted from colder and drier sites. I hypothesize that plants from colder are used to shorter growing seasons and will therefore flower earlier compared to plants from warmer sites. More information here.

Kaffemisjonen

Yesterday, I found a new coffee shop in Bergen, Kaffemisjonen. They have two shops in the city centre: Kaffemisjonen is located close to the harbour (bryggen) and Blom is on the hill close to the university. They have open everyday, make excellent coffee, give barista courses and sell coffee beans and equipment.

Rambera

You might have noticed that I post a lot of panorama pictures lately. I don’t have a wide angle lens on my camera and can’t get everything on the pictures. Panorama is the option to do it. This is the view from Rambera, another field site. In the distance you can see the Sognefjord.
