Second week in Chengdu

I like to explore new places and to figure out how things work in different parts of the world. But it can also be tiring. Even more I enjoy to come back to a place where I already know how things run.

I have been to Chengdu three times. And I start to get used to this lively Chinese life. I get used to the traffic and chaotic driving and how to safely cross a street. I learn how to communicate without understanding a single word (on both sides). I can accept that there are always people around me. But in the middle of all this noise, I have found quiet spots. A student took me to the Wenshu Monastery where we had lunch and enjoyed a tea ceremony. And I learn to write Chinese characters. I could have stayed there forever writing a language I will never be able to fully understand.

I have a bit more than a week before I will travel to Beijing for a couple of days, in the middle of the Chinese holiday. A new adventure, a new place to explore and find out how things work.

Crater Lake

I have forgotten that Oregon can be really hot in summer. It is sunny and between 35 and 40°C everyday. We have traveled from Mt. Hood to Bend, Crater Lake and are spending 2 days in Ashland.

Bend reminds me of Voss, because it is an outdoor city. You can do all sorts of outdoor activity; hiking, biking, kayaking and skiing in winter. We went for a short hike in the heat and cooled down with iced coffee.

Today, we visited Crater Lake. When we were here in 2013, the park was closed due to the government shutdown. But this time we made it to the blue lake.

In the afternoon, we drove south to Ashland. On our last trip to Oregon we discovered Ashland by chance and liked this charming little town in the middle of the desert so much that we had to come back. Tonight, we are spending the night in a tent.

Mt. Hood

I am back in Oregon for the ESA Conference in Portland. This is the third time I am visiting Oregon, but there is still a lot to discover. The nature is very diverse with coast, mountains, plains, and deserts. And I just love it.

Before the conference starts, Mr. K and me are travelling for a couple of days in Oregon and maybe Washington. We have started our trip at Mt. Hood. It’s very warm and dry but people were still skiing on Mt. Hood. We found the lovely Alpine Ski Haus to stay the night. And I even found some Norwegian bindings…

Where home is

Living abroad and traveling makes you think about what and where home is. I have called a lot of places home over the past years and I have tried to distinguish them by saying „home“, „home home“, etc. But I realized that home is something different. Somebody else would probably explain home differently, but for me is has three different meanings.

Home is a place where I can be by myself. There are usually things that I love, books, music, camera, my monkey. And it is the place I sleep and eat and go when I need to be alone, to think and drink a cup of tea.

Home is also the place where I have loved once. A place were I love to return to. My heart beats faster when I think about the place and when I go there. It can be memories from the childhood or new places I have learnt to love.

The third kind of home for me is nature. Being in nature can be so beautiful that it makes my heart jump. Hiking over a meadow, standing on a mountain, seeing the ocean after a long journey, skiing a slope in powder, walking through a magical forrest, looking at a glacier or swim in a fjord. All these things make me feel alive and strong. But at the same time I get this awareness that earth is our home, this beautiful planet that is the only home we have.

Home, for me is a feeling and it always comes from the heart.

This beautiful documentary by Jordan Manley has inspired me to think about what home means for me.

Capo Verde

We have arrived in Praia on Cape Verde. The weather is great and we are filling up with vitamin D. In the morning we walked through the city. In the afternoon we went to the old town (Cidade Vehla), where the Portuguese first arrived on the island.
