Stein, skog og ugress

Today, I went on a hike with Mari to check out a mountain cabin where she will celebrate her birthday with some friends. The weather was miserable but this did not matter after the shoes were soaked.

We passed Rundemanen (mountain top #3) and wandered around Øvre Jordalsvatne without view. We came to the cabin and met two men, who were fixing up the place. We got coffee and they started to talk about the lack of summer, hiking in the mountains around Bergen and gardening. And then one of them suddenly described western Norway in three words: stein, skog og ugress (stone, woods and weed).

Løvstakken #2

After a long period with cold weather and much rain the sun has found Bergen again. A few hours with sun and all the miserable weather is forgotten. People smile, go outside and enjoy.

I used the few sunny hours to climb another of Bergens mountains: Løvstakken. With 477 m Løvstakken is not the highest mountain but still very popular for hiking.

The sweet season

Summer is near and the field season has started. I am allowed to drive through western Norway, walk up mountains, lie on the ground all day and count flowers. Is there a better job?

I know I will get enough of field work, long rainy and cold days by the end of the season. But for now, for now life is grand.

Hardanger and Folgafonna

Some weeks ago I thought this is the last day of skiing before the summer. But it turned out I was wrong, because last week the summer ski center on the Folgafonna glacier opened. And there we went.

After driving through the beautiful Hardanger we arrived at the foot of the glacier. There is so much snow, that the road has at least 3m snow on each side. The weather was sunny, foggy and snowy and you could feel the cold icy air from the glacier when skiing down.

On the way home we missed the ferry by 2 minutes (despite the rally), and spent some time botanizing (got crash course in mosses) and had soft ice.

Takk for en kjempefin tur Mari!

My owl cup

I got an owl cup the other day from someone who has recently been to Olympia (thanks!!!). Now I enjoy my aeropress or V60 every day in this new cup. I think people smile at me, when they see what a big fuss I make out of a simple cup of coffee. Weighing in beans, the water and measuring the time the water needs to run through the filter. If they only knew…

Spring

A warm wind blew from the south today and there are flowers on every corner. It’s spring!

I got a camera today (from Japan), which I will install in the mountains this summer to record pollinators. Now I can start testing the thing in the rain! See how it likes Norwegian weather…
