Velsmakende urter

„Viltvoksende og velsmakende“ is a beautifully illustrated book from Nadia Nörbom about edible plants and other knowledge how plants can be used. The book describes how to recognize the plants, where the plants grow, when to harvest, about taste and smell, how to use and cook them, storage and medical use.

I have wanted to learn more about how to use the thousands of plants around us for a long time. I usually study them and use them in my experiments. But which plants we can eat and how can they help to prevent illnesses. I believe that nature has a lot more to give and a lot of this knowledge has been lost over time. Maybe I can learn a bit more with this book.

Living in my sleeping bag

It’s peak summer season and then again it’s not. For weeks it has been cold and rainy and not much of a summer up here in the North. But enough of that!
I spend 3-4 days in the field at the moment and it feels like I am living in my sleeping bag. Last week a lovely person from Switzerland visited me and I dragged her to the field. This was of course the deal all along and she enjoyed it half way I think. On the weekend we went to a festival in the mountains (vinjerock) which was spectacular. Spectacularly cold and wet, but also very much fun listening to Norwegian bands. I think we were the only non and half Norwegians at the festival and for a good reason. It’s a Norwegian thing, but we had fun.
A lot has happened but the days also repeat itself so here a few impressions from one rainy day at Gudmedalen!

Vanilla

I just got a bunch of vanilla pod from the jungle (from a friend who spent 4 month doing field work in Madagascar). My finger smell, the whole office smells. Good yes, but very intense. I put the pods in a plastic bag that they don’t dry out. What will I do with them? Vaniila cream, a cake, …? Any ideas?

Did she meet Alex, Marty and their friends? No, they were already gone to Africa and are running around in Europe at the moment but she got a glimpse of  the lemur king Julian!

Botanical Garden Tromsø

Today is our last day in Tromsø. The sun was shining from time to time, but it’s grey and windy. We decided to visit the botanical garden. And this made my day! A month ago I went on a Excursion to England and the highlight should have been a flower called Fritillaria. Sadly we only saw the white version and not the coloured one. But today in the botanical garden I found it! Tromsø seems the place to go.

Linnéa

These books about the girl Linnéa are written by two Swedish women. Christina Björk is writing and Lena Anderson drawing. One book is about how Linnéa goes to Paris with her grandfather and discovers the world of Claude Monet. Another book is about Linnéas passion: plants. And she tells you how and what she plants in her garden with the help of an old gardener. I love them.

Tea plant

Learnt yesterday:

There are two tea plants: Camellia sinensis from the Theaceae family. This is the Chinese Tea. Chamelia sinensis is smaller and grows at higher elevation. The other plant is called Camellia assamica. It has larger leaves, grows at lower elevations and is native in the Assam region.
